Our History

Our history as a New Testament assembly began in Newtongrange when several believers in the Lord Jesus met on the Lord's Day, the 2nd of November 1913, in the Lothian Halls, an old school building. This venue, which was demolished many years ago, was hired by the believers each week for their meetings.

On 28th June 1928, the believers purchased the hall on Dalhousie Road, Newtongrange, from the Church of Christ and renamed it the Ebenezer Hall.

Eventually, due to the deteriorating condition of this building and the lack of proper facilities, the ground at Stone Avenue, Mayfield, was obtained by Feu Disposition, and a building warrant to erect our present hall was granted on 6th January 1969 by Midlothian County Council. The hall was completed in 1970, and on 2nd May, an opening conference was held in the Combined School, opposite the hall. The speakers on that occasion were Bert Gamble from Plantation Street, Glasgow; Jimmy Paton from Beith; Hugh Scott from Whitburn; and Bobby Price from Kilbirnie.

To improve the facilities in our present hall, an extension was completed in 2003/2004. This addition provided a new side entrance, an extra room that can be opened onto the main hall by a sliding partition, upgraded toilet facilities, and a store room.

Who are we?

We are a small, independent assembly of Christians residing in the local community. Our gatherings are centered on the Lord Jesus Christ, and we aim to live out the teachings of the New Testament in our daily lives.

Leadership and Teaching
The care and oversight of the assembly are entrusted to the elders. Teaching and preaching are carried out by those within the church whom God has equipped for these roles. Additionally, we occasionally invite speakers from other assemblies to share with us. Every member is encouraged to use the gifts God has given them for the benefit of the whole body.

Public Worship and Teaching
We believe that the Bible teaches that public teaching and worship are the responsibility of men, as outlined in 1 Corinthians 14:34 and 1 Timothy 2:8, 11.

Our Mission
Our aim is to serve the local community by sharing the gospel—the good news that through His death and resurrection, the Lord Jesus can save people from their sins.

Membership and Participation

We welcome all visitors to our gatherings. Membership and participation in the Lord’s Supper are open to those who have been saved, baptized, and adhere to the "apostles' doctrine and fellowship" as described in Acts 2:41-42.

41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.

42 And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.

- Acts 2:41-42

What we believe:

THE BIBLE IS DIVINE IN ORIGIN

We believe the Bible is the inspired, infallible, and authoritative Word of God — useful for teaching, reproof, correction and training in righteousness.

  ‏
"All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works. "

- 2 Timothy 3:16-17

There is one God — Father, Son and Holy Spirit

We believe in one God, eternally existent in three Persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

16 When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. 17 And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”

- Matthew 3:16-17

THE WORLD AND MANKIND WAS CREATED BY GOD

We believe that in the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth, and that mankind was uniquely created in His image.

"In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth."

- Gen. 1:1

26 Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” 27 So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.

- Gen 1:26–27

Revelation 4:11

The cross and the resurrection

We believe that Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose again on the third day — this is of first importance. These events are the foundation of our hope and the means of our salvation.

3 For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures,

The Lord Jesus — His birth, deity and sinlessness

We believe the Lord Jesus was born of a virgin (fulfilling prophecy), lived without sin, and is both fully God and fully man. “For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily,” and the virgin birth is recorded in Scripture.

18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit.

- Matthew 1:18

4 Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, 5 to be registered with Mary, his betrothed wife, who was with child.

- Luke 2:4-5

22 So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: 23 “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.”

- Matthew 1:22-23

9 For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily;

- Colossians 2:9

THE LORD JESUS CHRIST IS BOTH FULLY MAN AND FULLY GOD

We believe that Jesus Christ is both fully God and fully man, having been manifested to take away our sins, and in Him there is no sin.

5 And you know that He was manifested to take away our sins, and in Him there is no sin.

Salvation through Christ alone; mediator and ransom

We believe that God has provided salvation only through the Lord Jesus Christ. There is no other name given among men by which we must be saved; Christ is the one Mediator who gave Himself as a ransom for all.

12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

- Acts 4:12

6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

- John 14:6

3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;

4 Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.

5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;

6 Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.

- 1 Timothy 2:3-6

The human condition and need of salvation

We believe all mankind is fallen and in need of salvation.

All have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

-Romans 3:23

The wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Rom. 6:23

GOD HAS PROVIDED SALVATION THROUGH THE LORD JESUS

We believe eternal life is a gift from God, received by grace through faith — not by works, so that no one may boast.

8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

- Ephesians 2:8-9

See also: Romans 3:24; Titus 3:5; Romans 5:15; Romans 11:6

Eternal Life as a Gift from God

We believe eternal life is a gift from God, received by grace through faith — not by works, so that no one may boast.

4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,

5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)

8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

- Ephesians 2:4-5, 8-9

The Lord Jesus — head of the Church

We believe the Lord Jesus Christ is the Head of the Church. He gives gifted leaders to the body to equip the saints and build the assembly until we grow into the fullness of Christ.

18 And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.

- Colossians 1:18

11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;

12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:

13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:

14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;

15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:

-Ephesians 4:11-15

THE CHURCH EXISTS TO WORSHIP, PRAY AND SERVE.

The church exists to worship God, pray, proclaim the gospel and serve one another. We observe the Lord’s Supper, practise believer’s baptism, gather for teaching and fellowship, and seek to live out the New Testament pattern of worship and service.

23 For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, that the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread:

24 And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.

25 After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, this cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.

26 For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come.

- 1 Corinthians 11:23–26

41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.

42 And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.

47 Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.

- Acts 2:41–42, 47

8 I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting.

9 In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;

10 But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.

11 Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection.

12 But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.

The second coming of Christ

We believe the Lord Jesus Christ will return. He has gone to prepare a place for us and will come again; at His coming, the dead in Christ will be raised, and believers will be caught up to be with the Lord.

2 In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.

3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

- John 14:2–3

16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:

17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.
